Muslim philosophers, like Fārābi, have focused on the issue of art and its political, social and ethical functions in their different works. Likewise, contemporary intellectuals such as Morteza Motahari, Muhammad Taqi Ja'fari, and Javadi Amoli have also held thorough discussions on this issue which could be the basis for a theory of art and aesthetics. In Fārābi's theory of utopian art, the artist is placed in the second class of the utopian art and contains religious realities and reasonable happiness. This does not negate artistic creativity and aesthetic features, but it includes all artistic values and presupposes the artistic nature of utopian art. This theory spans sensual and imaginary form imaginations to rationalistic imaginations or wise are approach. Amusing art if directed in ultimate path of happiness is acceptable by Fārābi in a strict limitation and extent. In the works of contemporary intellectuals, different ranks of beauty and art is not negated but it is emphasized that art an beauty is not confined to different kinds of sensual and materialistic even to the intellectual beauty and includes reasonable beauty. For instance, in the introduction of Dastan va Rastan, Mutahari has noticed to wisdom art approach and preaching the knowledge to the society and stresses out that neglecting this fact is a kind of social disorder.
