The Islamic sages believe in the purgatorial and rational abstraction of the soul, but only Mullā Ṣadrā has proven the super-rational abstraction of the soul. The super-rational abstraction means abstraction from essence, and Ibn Sīnā and his followers have not accept such a position and rank for the soul, because they consider this status proven only for the Almighty God and believe that if the soul has such a position and rank, it will have the position of the Necessary Being. The authors of this study, using a descriptive and analytical method, intend to show how the belief in the abstraction of the soul has changed among sages from Al-Fārābī to Mullā Ṣadrā, and what their arguments in this regard are. This article also analyzes and evaluates the roots of this transformation. The results of the research show that Al-Fārābī and Ibn Sīnā believe in the complete intellectual abstraction and have presented evidence to prove it based on the principles of their system. However, Mullā Ṣadrā (also known as Sheikh-i Ishrāq) has merely dealt with the illuminative explanation of the supra-rational abstraction of the soul, without presenting any evidence to prove it, and he considers the possibility an infinite journey for the soul. Therefore, Mullā Ṣadrā is the only philosopher who has presented an argument for the supra-rational abstraction of the human rational soul based on the principles of his system; because his principles are suitable for proving this view.
